Four Funny Families is based on Chekhov’s four major plays (The
Seagull, Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters, Cherry Orchard).
It is a unique
attempt to:
1) Present all plays as a cycle, revealing basic parallels between Chekhov’s
four plays.
2) Make it a comedy, following Chekhov’s definition of his plays as
comedies.
3) Create it in a post-modern style production.
The
concept of the film is based on V. Ulea’s
course on Chekhov’s comedy
that she teaches at the University of Pennsylvania, as well as her two
books.-
A Systems Approach to Literature: Mythopoetics of
Chekhov's Four Major Plays
(Greenwood, 1997) and
A Concept of Dramatic Genre and The Comedy Of A New
Type: Chess, Literature, and Film
(Southern Illinois University Press,
2002)
Theatrical and film actors from Canada and Ukraine, as well as from
Philadelphia, New York, and Seattle take part in this production.
